The area & local attractions
Roc'h ar Hed is situated in the country within easy reach of fantastic golden beaches and the best of Brittany's towns and coastline.
Within a mile there is a small shop selling wine and simple groceries at Plufur la Gare. There is also a small bakery in Plufur opposite the church. For the more serious food shopping the Super U at Plestin les Greves is less than a 15 min drive and offers a good selection of produce, has an excellent fish department and sells discounted petrol. Plestin les Greves has a variety of other shops making the area very self contained, there is a large open market every Sunday morning and mid week a craft market in the evening.
The area around Plufur is known as Tregor, it is situated in the Cote D'Armor region of Brittany - literally the 'armoured coast' otherwise known as the Pink Granite Coast. Hard to describe in words, pink granite cliffs with oddly shaped rock clusters and an ever changing scene as the 40'+ tide rises and falls.
Plestin les Greves is around a 15 minute drive from Plufur and mile or so further down the road there are attractive moorings, the 'Corniche' which is a spread of several west facing golden sandy beaches and Locquirec with its attractive harbour, restaurants & cafe overlooking the sea and a sheltered beach and interesting harbour. Pictured is dancing in the square at Locquirec.
Of particular interest is the fantastic walk around the headland at Locquirec, a fairly flat, safe and most rewarding circular walk with great sea views and a beer or ice cream reward at the end.
Morlaix with its dominantly grand viaduct and 17th century streets is a must to visit, for the health and adventurous a walk up to the viewing area provides a panoramic picture opportunity and for those wanting a more leisurely time there is a fun 'toy' bus ride around the town. On the west side of Morlaix, just off the 'St Martin des Champs' N12 exit lies the 'Giant' HyperMarche which sells just about everything under one roof. The size and scale of the store complex makes it a one-stop-shop experience.
Lannion lies on the banks of a river which feeds fast flowing water into an estuary. The adventurous tourists can hire a canoe and fight the rapids and swirling waters. For those less brave it is fun to watch. The town is quite large and has a good selection of shops, a beautiful square and fascinating cobbled streets. On the outskirts of Lannion in the direction of Treguier thee is a good garden centre and a shop called Giffy where something can be found to take home for 'Auntie Dorris and Mavis the neighbour'.
Just to the south of Plufur is the quaint village of Guerlsquin where life stopped a few decades ago. In the square there is an ancient prison – now on view as a museum. The hotel opposite offers superb food, lunch goes course after course at a very reasonable price. Drivers are advise to avoid their melon with port, alcoholic main courses and the vodka sorbet! Short straw games suggested to select the driver when going there!!
Further south again there are various nature parks, country walks and lakes set up with water sports.
Brest is further west of the area where there are various attractions such as a marine centre and ten pin bowling. At the time of writing this we have not been there ourselves - but have been told its well worth a day out.
St Malo is around a 90 min drive to the east and combined with a trip to nearby Mont St Michel would make a memorable round trip.
Closer to Plufur there are also many local attractions such as horse riding, tennis courts and a Goule village to explore.
There is so much to see, one week would be action packed and even with a two week break one would not exhaust the possibilities to relax and explore this beautiful and un spoilt part of the world.
